The Large Veranda Kilim by Zofia Strumiłło-Sukiennik

The Large Veranda is one of the most ambitious kilims produced by Splot to date. Taking approximately five weeks to weave, it is a remarkable demonstration of skill, patience, and craftsmanship, brought to life by a small group of Polish weavers working within a centuries-old textile tradition.

Designed by Zofia Strumiłło-Sukiennik, the piece draws inspiration from the wooden architecture of Podlasie, a region in northeastern Poland known for its distinctive rural buildings. The repeating structure of a traditional veranda is reinterpreted through a contemporary lens, appearing to fragment and shift across the surface almost like a digital glitch. It is a design that feels simultaneously rooted in tradition and surprisingly modern.

Handwoven on a linen warp using thick wool tapestry yarn, The Large Veranda follows techniques established by Cepelia, the Central Folk Art and Crafts Union that helped preserve Poland’s weaving traditions throughout the twentieth century. Much of the wool is spun by hand from fleeces sourced in the Podhale region, while existing yarn stocks are incorporated according to zero-waste principles. The result is a textile of exceptional complexity and character, created to be lived with and passed down for generations.
